Dog Gone Days
“FOUR LEGS GOOD, TWO LEGS BAD.”
The Matador moved gracefully, clothed in red. He watched the bull
line-up the target and charge towards him. All of a sudden, a haze seemed to
settle in. The bull started to shrink and its ominous horns seemed to dissolve
into incisive canines. The Matador seemingly followed suit, transforming into a
biker (on a red bike adorning a red helmet – just like me). As the mist
cleared, realization hit me (rather bit me) as the bull (now a street dog) leapt
at my ankle and sunk its teeth in my flesh (Readers, ignore the slight exaggeration).
Like a streak of lightning, the pain registered in my head and a Wikipedia page
seemed to open (in a slow browser) titled “Rabies.”
Friends, fellow victims and dear “Animal activists.” Is this the way
the world is supposed to end (as per the Mayan calendar)? Where Animals
overthrow humans in the race to survival? No offence meant but I just finished
reading George Orwell’s “Animal Farm,” and the effects haven’t worn off yet.
Why do dogs chase harmless motorists? Here’s a snapshot from some
expert website.
“Some car chasers are just
answering the instinctive call to the hunt: Anything that moves can serve as
prey. Others may be acting on territorial instincts, driving away (no pun
intended) the motorized intruder from their turf. Still others -- usually
herding breeds or mutts with strong herding instincts -- are trying to get
those wayward cars back into the "flock." Basically, any dog will be
inclined to give chase to a moving object -- a tossed stick or ball, a passing
cat or squirrel.”
And why did I get bitten?
My answer: Perhaps, it wasn’t one of my luckier days.
Personal half of the World: You must have done something to the dog; in
this life or previous lives. (sighs)
Professional half of the world: The dog might have figured that you are
part of the HR team. (bellows)
So, what do you do when a dog (especially a stray one) bites? Wash the
wound with water and soap for 20 minutes (imagine that, simply
washing a wound for 20 minutes). Get to the nearest hospital and check out the array
of injections available (a menu could help with the various rates). And
depending on the doctor’s discretion, start the dose of injections. I am not
getting into the medical aspects of it, but rest assured – a lot of money can
get spent based on the dog’s discretion.
It doesn’t end there. No alcohol for the duration of the vaccines (each
one hurts more than the previous one) and blood donation is prohibited for a
year after the vaccination is completed.
Throughout the trauma, one thought repeatedly made its way into my
head. Every day we read about dogs that maul babies and children to death. And we can't move our little finger to stop the menace of stray and rabid dogs. For the record, I totally hate that lady who is an Indian politician, animal rights
activist, environmentalist, former model and widow & daughter-in-law of a
former Indian Prime Minister who should have all these stray dogs for company.
